The brief

A highly detailed, architecturally driven home on a steep, rocky site in Gerringong — with clients based in Sydney who wanted a builder they could trust to run the project largely independently. Regular updates mattered more to them than day-to-day involvement.

The Challenge

The site itself was the first hurdle — steep and heavily rocky ground, with a 3.5 metre excavation cut and early rain during the dig. Spoil had to be removed via a ramp that was being carved out progressively as the excavator worked its way clear.

On the design side, a lot of fine architectural detail — particularly the structural steel and a highlight-window design intended to make the roof appear to float above the kitchen, living, and dining spaces — wasn’t fully resolved on the original drawings. It needed to be worked through as the build progressed, not solved once upfront.

The Solution

We worked in close, ongoing collaboration with the project architect throughout — fortnightly meetings to refine detailing as it came up. That relationship made the difference: a complex job that, with the right collaboration, never felt like a hard one.

With the clients based away from the site, we kept them across progress with weekly updates, so they always knew where things stood without needing to be there in person.

The Outcome

The finished home exceeded expectations — the clients have described it as a home they love spending time in, and the relationship has continued well past handover, with the team returning for the occasional maintenance visit along the way.
